Description

This instant download includes a follow-along DIY Printing Press building video, downloadable hand drawn press plans, and a page of tips and advice for building your press or sourcing parts. After we build your press, I show you your printmaking set up. I’ll show you your press bed and where to find it. I’ll do a quick demonstrations of how to press prints with this DIY hand press.

The video is about 25 minutes long so you can build your press right along with me. I skip the introduction and dive right into building your printing press. I’ll show you the rollers, how to mount your rollers on your base, how to secure your rollers, and how to set up your press bed and felt blankets. This is the easiest DIY printing press to assemble. There are only 5 unique parts and 11 pieces total, all of which I have found at my local hardware stores.

The problem with most DIY or small printing presses is that they limit the type of print you can press, or the size of your print. I wanted an alternative press that allowed me to print larger etchings and monotypes. I developed the design for this press 15 years ago when I didn’t have the money or the space for an etching press. I spent weeks visiting my local hardware stores to find the parts that would fit together to make this unique printing press design. I thought then that this handmade press was a temporary solution, but I still press all of my prints with it today. I’ve pressed drypoint etchings and chemically etched intaglio plates, woodcut, linocuts, monoprints and I’ve even designed and pressed my own letterpress plates. I never did invest a traditional tabletop press, but I’ve continued to be a printmaker. I sell my prints in my Etsy shop, I set up my own table at local art events. Sometimes I demonstrate live printmaking at these fairs and popups. The pocket press is very portable. Today, my prints have been shown and collected nationally. I filmed this video so you can also enjoy printmaking without a press, at least, not a traditional one.

I carefully closed captioned this craft video to be accessible for deaf and hard of hearing creatives. It is easy to follow along without the need for sound.
